A little over a month from now and every fireworks enthusiasts will stand witness to spectacular showcase of breathtaking display of colors exploding in the skies of SM Mall of Asia. The 3rd Philippine International Pyromusical Competition will be held from February 11 to March 17, 2012.

The 1st World Pyro Olympics took place in The Esplanade at the back of then unfinished SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines from December 26, 2005 to December 30, 2005. Firework materials were placed in the participant’s barge floating within Manila Bay. There were a total of 10 countries who participated on the first year including the Philippines (Australia, China, Germany, South Korea, Russia, South Africa, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom and the United States of America). Australia was adjudged as the champion of the first competition.
The 2nd World Pyro Olympics was again hosted by the Philippines from January 5 to January 7 and January 12 & January 13, 2007 at The Esplanade at the newly completed SM Mall of Asia. The following countries participated: Australia, Germany, Spain, Denmark, Poland, Canada, United Kingdom, United States of America and the Philippines. The United Kingdom won the 2007 competition and the team from China won an award for technical precision. I was able to watch the United Kingdom show and it was really breathtaking. I was almost in tears (well fireworks have that effect on me really).
The 3rd World Pyro Olympics was hosted by the Philippines yet again from May 3 to May 31, 2008 (Saturdays only), at The Esplanade in front of the 3rd Largest Mall in the World SM Mall of Asia. La Mancha Pyro Productions showcased a pyromusical display at the final night of the competition, just right after the show made by all of the participants. The countries that participated this year are Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, and Venezuela. Italy won the said competition.
The 1st World PyroMusical Competition (notice the shift and change of title) was supposed to be held in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City in 2009 but was postponed. The 2010 winners were United Kingdom in 1st place, Australia in 2nd place and Japan in third place. The 2nd World PyroMusical Competition was once again hosted by the Philippines. For 2011, 1st place went to China followed by United Kingdom on the second spot and Japan still at third place. Since Philippines is the host country, we’re not part of the competition but we still get to showcase breath-taking fireworks display on the event. And the third will be this year! I guess they love awarding the hosting to the Philippines because our air is polluted anyway. Kidding aside, fireworks competition have such a strong following here in the country.
